San Francisco’s Chinatown is built around Grant Avenue, which is depicted here by painter Jack Laycox. Chinese immigrants have faced a turbulent history in the United States; discriminatory laws prevented them from marrying non-Chinese, to vote, and they are the only ethnic group to have been specifically denied entrance to this country. Although not of Asian descent himself, Jack Laycox was inspired by the brilliant colors and fanfare of the Chinese New Year celebration in Chinatown, San Francisco. He painted this watercolor work in a “wet-into-wet” style, which involved soaking the paper before applying the watercolor pigment. This created the blurred lines and forms that make this image so striking. This work is currently on display at the Hilbert Museum.
